State of the City Address
2/01/05
We wandered over by the Glendale
Civic Center to watch KGLN setup to Video the Mayor's address.
You may have been there, you will
see it on the news tonight and it will be re-run but while it was
being filmed by KGLN Here is some background on the production and
engineering behind recording and televising it!
There were producers, camera
crew, engineers and operations people all working in harmony to
record this photonic symphony.
Between the camera crew inside the civic
center and the many people seated in this truck and entire video
production was made.
In addition it is transmitted
back using an antenna that was on top of the civic center linking
the truck and crew to the main studio in the Sub-basement 2 at city hall.
This truck is a fascinating piece of
equipment to learn more about it, what it contains, where everyone sits
and how it is used click

Plate
It Up has holiday season interrupted by road work... Ed
Sharpe Cub Reporter 12/28/04
Much to the chagrin of Heather Burton, Owner of PLATE IT UP, a store
selling culinary tools and offering classes in the art of preparing fine
cuisine, a collapsed main sewer line in front of her store brought
about a massive amount of roadwork during this holiday season.
In the Glendale Daily Planet’s conversation with Demo Jaquez , an
employee with the City of Glendale, he related that the sewer line had
collapsed in one spot. He continued that further investigation of the
sewer line with the city's sewer crawling video camera, more evidence
was presented indicating a need to replace the rest of the line between
Myrtle and Palmaire in the alley running parallel with 57 drive and 57
Ave.
This length of sewer was slated for replacement in 6 month to a year in
the future but due to the work that needed to be done to replace the
damaged run and the deteriorating nature of the rest of the line,
replacement was deemed necessary.
This event started 12/22/04 and will be completed sometime after
the first of the year.
Heather countered the ill effects of this construction by placing extra
signage in front of her store. Other friendly neighborhood retailers joined
in by allowing her to place signs on their properties also.
"They were willing to relocate the project management trailer that
was in front of the store" Heather remarked. She continued that the
city has been responsive to the best of their ability considering the
situation.

BRAND
NEW CIRQUE DU GLENDALE EVENT BROUGHT
MYSTIQUE TO DOWNTOWN GLENDALE OCT. 20-21
Historic
Downtown Glendale played host to a multitude of street performers and
fantasy characters when the city kicked off That Thursday Thing,
with a brand new street fair festival called Cirque du Glendale in
downtown Glendale from 5-10 p.m. on Oct.
20 and 21.
That
Thursday Thing will take place on the
third Thursday of every month, from October through May in newly-renovated
Murphy Park. The area’s antique stores, specialty shops and boutiques
will be open late these evenings. Each month, the event will have a
different theme that will give shoppers and fun-seekers an extra reason to
head to downtown Glendale.
The
kick-off event, Cirque du Glendale, featured street
performers, also known as “buskers,” of every imaginable sort
entertaining throughout the downtown area. Guests were enchanted and
entertained by comedians, magicians, stilt walkers, barbershop quartets,
unicyclists, accordionists, face painters, clowns, chalk artists, henna
artists, caricature artists, psychics, hypnotists and many more. Visitors
encountered characters they remembered from fantasy, fairy tale and
legend, such as Spiderman, Superman, Peter Pan, Tinkerbell, The Easter
Bunny and Santa Claus, putting in an early appearance.
Guests
even tried their hand at being a “busker,” with the Stilt Walking
Workshop, located in Murphy Park. A professional stilt walker gave free
lessons to all those wishing they had run away and joined the circus.
Children participated, too, as miniature stilts will be just their
size.
The
entertainment was complete with awesome music.Several stellar bands performed, rounding out the most exciting
entertainment lineup in the Valley.
Other
bands performing in various locations throughout Old Towne Glendale and
Historic Catlin Court are: Crossfire, The Dyno Glides, Blue Fur and Stan
Devereaux.
In
the true, hometown festival fashion, Murphy Park, located at 58th
and Glendale avenues, hosted Fiesta Glendale. The park was abuzz with music, dance and traditional
food. Two stages of entertainment, including the Valley’s hottest Latin
jazz and rock bands, traditional
music and dance performances delighted the crowds
that attended.
A
special treat was the appearance of the the Mexican consulate. Cónsul
General Carlos Flores Vizcarra who re-enacted the cry for independence in the flag ceremony.
Mexican Independence Day holds the same meaning as the 4th of July does:
both events are the celebration of the overthrow of occupation by a foreign
power over residents of a remotely ruled nation... In addition the Consulate
was presented a plaque from Governor Janet Napolitano's office of Arizona.
The
food was wonderful, the music fantastic, but to truly learn the meaning of
Mexican Independence Day please read many of the articles presented in the
links below. It is a rich history.
